Reading & account
The free tier gives you eight articles a calendar month, and the count resets at 00:00 IST on the first of each month. Breaking news, live blogs, election results, public-safety notices, corrections and our standards pages sit outside the meter and never count against you. When you reach the limit the article is replaced by a short notice rather than a blurred page, so you always know why.
Shared links count against your own monthly allowance unless they were created as gift links from a paying account. Subscribers on Digital Annual and All Access can generate gift links that open in full for anyone, five a month.
Reading in a private window does not reset the meter; it usually starts a fresh count that ends sooner, because the browser discards the record when the window closes.
No, but a free account is worth having. Registering with an email address and a one-time code, with no card involved, keeps your article count consistent across devices, lets you save stories and gives you the Morning Brief. Registration takes about twenty seconds and you can delete the account at any time.
We sign you in with a one-time code rather than a password, so start by checking the spam folder and confirming the address you typed matches the one on the account. Codes expire after fifteen minutes and each new request invalidates the previous one, so use the most recent email.
If the code still fails, write to the reader-services desk from the address on the account and we will sign you in manually within one working day.
Free accounts allow one device, Digital allows two, and Digital Annual and All Access allow four, with All Access adding a second household seat that has its own four devices. You can see every active session under Account → Security and sign out of any of them remotely. Signing in on a new device beyond your limit simply ends the oldest session.
Open Account → Profile and enter the new address. We send a confirmation code to the new address and a notice to the old one, and the change takes effect once the code is entered. Newsletters, saved lists and your subscription move with the account; nothing needs to be re-purchased.
Go to Account → Privacy → Delete account. We hold the request for fourteen days so an accidental deletion can be reversed, then remove your profile, saved lists, newsletter subscriptions and reading history. Comments you posted are anonymised rather than removed, so replies still make sense.
Billing records are retained for eight years because Indian tax law requires it; nothing in them is used for marketing. The full retention schedule is in our Privacy Policy.
Subscriptions & billing
There are four reader tiers: Free at ₹0 with eight articles a month; Digital at ₹199 a month for unlimited articles, the e-paper and five newsletters; Digital Annual at ₹1,799 a year, which adds the full archive back to 2011; and All Access at ₹2,999 a year, which adds premium newsletters, live events, gift subscriptions and a second household seat.
Every price includes GST. The complete feature-by-feature comparison is on the pricing page.
UPI with an auto-pay mandate you can revoke from your own banking app, credit and debit cards on Visa, Mastercard, RuPay and American Express, and net banking with fifty-four Indian banks. Wallets work for one-off annual payments. Institutional licences can be settled by NEFT against a purchase order with thirty-day terms.
We retry a failed charge three times over ten days and email you each time, so a temporary bank decline rarely costs you access. Access pauses only after the third failure, and resumes the moment a payment succeeds, with the term extended by the days you lost.
The most common cause is a UPI auto-pay mandate that expired or was revoked in the banking app rather than on our site.
Add your company name and GSTIN under Account → Billing before the charge date and every subsequent invoice will carry them. Invoices are issued within twenty-four hours of payment and stay downloadable for eighty-four months. Place of supply is taken from the address on the account, so keep it current if your office moves.
Account → Subscription → Cancel. It is two clicks, there is no retention questionnaire and nobody will telephone you. Access continues until the end of the period you have paid for, after which the account reverts to the free tier with your saved lists intact.
Cancel within fourteen days of an annual charge or seven days of a monthly one and we refund in full to the original payment method in five to seven working days.
Yes. You can pause a paid plan for up to three months in any twelve-month period, in whole weeks, from Account → Subscription → Pause. Billing stops for the paused period and the remaining term is pushed back by the same number of days, so you lose nothing. Saved lists, newsletters and comment history stay exactly as they were.
Students enrolled at a recognised Indian institution pay ₹539 a year, a 70% reduction, with full Digital Annual features including the archive. Serving teachers, lecturers and librarians pay ₹899 a year and receive classroom reprint rights for twenty-five articles.
Digital Annual includes one gift subscription a year and All Access includes two; both can be scheduled to arrive on a chosen date.
Not during a term you have already paid for. Existing annual subscribers keep their rate for the life of the subscription unless they change tier. If a renewal price ever has to move, you receive an email thirty days beforehand stating the old price, the new price and a one-click way to cancel.
E-paper & newsletters
The e-paper is published by 6:00 AM IST every day including Sundays, with a late edition at 9:00 AM on days when a major story breaks overnight. Digital and above include all nine city editions, so you can read the Kolkata paper from Bengaluru. Free accounts see the front page of the New Delhi edition only.
Digital Annual and All Access subscribers can download any edition as a page-faithful PDF, and downloads stay readable for thirty days. Each PDF is watermarked with your account reference, which is why we ask that you do not redistribute it; classroom and library sharing is covered by an institutional licence instead.
Downloads cover the past ninety days on Digital Annual and the full archive on All Access.
The Morning Brief lands at 7:00 AM IST daily and is free to everyone. Subscribers also receive the Evening Ledger at 6:30 PM, the Weekend Read on Saturday mornings, Campus Notes on Wednesdays and Science Weekly on Fridays.
All Access adds three premium letters: Policy Desk, Market Ledger and the reporter’s notebook that goes out at the end of each quarter.
Every issue carries two links at the foot: one that manages your individual preferences and one that stops all email from us. Use the first to switch off a single letter; the change applies from the next send, usually within an hour. Unsubscribing from newsletters never affects your subscription or your access to the site.
Check the Promotions or Updates tab and the spam folder first, then add our sending address to your contacts so future issues route to the inbox. Corporate mail filters are the usual culprit; if you can, ask your administrator to allow our sending domain.
If three consecutive issues bounce we pause delivery automatically, and you can restart it in one click from Account → Newsletters.
Yes. Every issue is published to the newsletter archive on the site within fifteen minutes of the send, with the same text and charts and no tracking. Subscribers can read the full archive going back three years; free accounts can read the past thirty days. Each issue also has a permanent link you can share.
Editorial standards
Use the “Request a correction” link at the foot of every article, or write to the reader editor through the contact page with the headline, the date and the specific sentence at issue. A standards editor reviews every request within one working day.
If we were wrong, we amend the article, add a dated correction note at the foot and list it in the public corrections log. If we were not, we write back and explain why.
News reports what happened and attributes every claim. Analysis, labelled in blue above the headline, weighs what it might mean and is written by reporters who cover the subject. Opinion carries the author’s photograph and a standing label, and represents that author alone, not the publication.
Sponsored material is labelled “Paid content” at headline size and is produced by a commercial studio with no newsroom involvement.
We name sources wherever we can, because a named source is a source a reader can weigh. Anonymity is granted only when the information is in the public interest, cannot be obtained on the record and the source faces a real risk; a senior editor must know the identity and approve the grant.
When we use an anonymous source we say why anonymity was given and describe their position as precisely as safety allows. Single-source claims of fact are not published without corroborating documents or a second independent source.
Nothing goes out until we have spoken to the person who captured it, confirmed the location against satellite and street-level imagery, and checked the file’s metadata and reverse-image history. If any of those steps fails, the material is not used, however striking it is.
Verified user material is credited to the contributor and labelled as such. Where something cannot be fully verified we may still publish, but we say plainly what remains unconfirmed.
We update stories constantly as facts firm up, and every substantive change adds a dated update note explaining what changed. Unpublishing is rare and is reserved for material that is unlawful, that poses a serious risk to someone’s safety, or that was published in error.
Requests to remove old coverage of an individual are considered case by case against the public interest. In most cases we add a note recording a later outcome, such as an acquittal, rather than deleting the record.
Advertisers buy audience and placement, never coverage. They do not see stories before publication and cannot ask for one to be delayed, softened or withdrawn, and the commercial team holds no editing rights in the publishing system and does not attend the morning news conference.
Where a story concerns an advertiser, a licensing client or our owner, the relationship is disclosed inside the article in the same typeface as the copy around it. The full statement sits on the advertising rate card.
Send a pitch of no more than 400 words to the relevant desk through the contact page, saying what the story is, why now, who you will speak to and what you have already confirmed. Include two links to previous work; we read pitches from people with no bylines as well.
Commissioning editors reply within ten working days. We pay on acceptance rather than on publication, and a commissioned piece we decide not to run still carries a 50% kill fee.
Accessibility & languages
Use the EN and हिं buttons at the top right of the utility bar on any page. The choice is stored in your browser and applied on every future visit, and it switches navigation, section labels and interface text immediately without reloading the page.
Articles originally written in Hindi appear in Hindi; translated versions are marked as translations, because a translation is an editorial act and we would rather say so.
The three A buttons in the utility bar set the text scale to small, default or large, and the setting is remembered in your browser across pages and visits. Because the whole type scale is relative, headlines, body text and captions move together and nothing overlaps.
Browser zoom and your operating system’s own font-size setting work normally as well; the layout reflows to 200% zoom without horizontal scrolling.
Yes. The site is built to WCAG 2.2 AA and tested with NVDA and JAWS on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, and TalkBack on Android. Every page opens with a skip link, uses landmark regions and a strict heading order, labels every icon-only control, and announces live regions such as the breaking ticker and form results politely.
We commission an independent audit twice a year and fix confirmed blockers ahead of everything else in the queue. Report a barrier to the support desk and you will hear back within one working day.
If your system asks for reduced motion, the breaking ticker stops scrolling, the live indicator stops pulsing and all fades are disabled. Menus, accordions and tabs are fully keyboard operable with arrow keys, Home, End and Escape, and focus outlines are always visible.
Body text meets or exceeds a 4.5:1 contrast ratio, and we never use colour alone to carry meaning.
Every published video carries human-checked captions in the language spoken, plus English captions where the original is in another language. Podcasts are transcribed and the transcript is posted with the episode, usually within four hours of release and always within a day.
Charts carry a text description, and subscribers can open the underlying data table.
Advertising & privacy
For everyone we record which articles were opened, how far they were read and basic device and coarse location information, so we can tell which reporting is working and keep the site running. Signed-in readers additionally have their saved lists, newsletter choices and interface preferences stored against the account.
We do not build advertising profiles from what you read about health, religion, sexuality or political views.
The banner on your first visit offers Essential only or Accept all, and the choice is stored in your browser. Choosing Essential only keeps the cookies that remember your language, text size and sign-in, and switches off measurement and advertising cookies entirely.
You can change the decision at any time from the Cookie preferences link in the footer, and clearing your browser storage brings the banner back.
No. We do not sell, rent or trade personal data, and we do not pass email addresses to advertisers, partners or data brokers. Advertisers receive aggregate reporting only: how many people saw a placement and in which section, never who they were.
The processors we do use — for payments, email delivery and hosting — are named in the Privacy Policy along with what each one handles.
Ad-light, on Digital and Digital Annual, removes interstitials, autoplay video advertising and all behavioural targeting, leaving a small number of static placements sold on section context alone. Ad-free, on All Access, removes advertising from articles, the e-paper and the newsletters.
Sponsored features remain visible on every tier because they are content rather than advertising slots — and they are always labelled.
Write to the advertising desk through the contact page with your objective, budget range and dates, and we return a written quote with indicative CPMs, a placement map and our exclusions within two working days. Indicative rates run from ₹340 CPM for run-of-site display to ₹1,150 CPM for a newsletter slot; the full card is on the pricing page.
Every booking is reviewed against our brand-safety list, and we decline campaigns that would place advertising against coverage of deaths, disasters or live investigations.
Signed-in readers can export their profile, saved lists, comment history and reading record from Account → Privacy → Download my data; the file is prepared within an hour. Requests to correct, restrict or erase data, or to object to processing, can be sent to the grievance officer and are answered within thirty days as the law requires.
If a request cannot be met in full, we tell you which part and why.
Write to info@catalystwebtrendz.com marked for the attention of the Grievance Officer, or call +91-9953590779 between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM IST, Monday to Friday. Privacy complaints are acknowledged within two working days and resolved within thirty.
Security researchers reporting a vulnerability get an acknowledgement within one working day, and we will not pursue action against good-faith testing that does not access other readers’ data.
